Land & Environment Court Matters

The Land and Environment Court of New South Wales was established in 1980 as a superior Court of record. It replaced a Tribunal, a Court, an appeal board, and a Board of Review.

The Land and Environment Court of New South Wales is a specialist planning and environmental court, it has a wide authority to interpret and enforce environmental law in New South Wales. Residents in other states are advised to contact the relevant authority in their state.

The following is a brief summary of the courts work:

• Hear appeals about development application decision by your Local Council;

• Hear appeals about building application decision by your Local Council;

• Environmental planning ;

• Award compensation if your land is acquired by the government;

• Environmental planning protection;

• Deal with environmental crimes, such as pollution;

• Hear appeals from people found guilty of an environmental offence in the Local Court.
